Sri Aandal Vastu Rules

Sri Aandal Vastu Rules was framed by Dr.Andal P.Chockalingam, my vastu guru, after years of learning and thorough research. These rules is THE juicy extract of the entire universe of vastu knowledge. These have been framed for easy understanding of vastu even for a layman. Anybody can question or seek clarification from an expert of vastu if one knows these 6 simple rules.

  1. Plot, and the building inside the plot should be square or rectangle.
  2. South West should be higher than North East – Plot, Building, external environment, etc.
  3. The main entrance of the plot or building should be in positive zone.
  4. Any road or street hitting against the plot like a “T” or “L” should only be on a positive zone of the plot.
  5. The space between the building and the compound wall in the North or East should be more than the space in the South or West respectively.
  6. Internal staircase should be planned only in the middle of South or West directions; External staircase can planned in any direction other than North East without pillar.

Vastu for Living/Drawing Room!

Generally, Living Room is being constructed after providing for a sit out of a house, or sometimes, the entry from outside will be direct to the living room. The entry to the living/drawing room should be in the positive zone(உச்சஸ்தானம்/उच्चस्थान/ഉച്ചസ്ഥാനം). The details of positive zones for all the directions can be found in my previous posts.

Sofasets, Cupboards, Book Shelves, etc can be placed in the southern or western regions. Television sets can be placed in the South East or North West regions of the Drawing Room. It is good, if a separate Study Room is allotted for children, which should invariably be in the North East. Due to space constraints, if the living room is also used for study, it should be ensured that the children should face East or North while studying. Keep the windows in the North & East of the North East room open 24/7.

Vastu & Bath Room/Toilet

Vastu does not support any toilet inside the house. Of all the options available, North West would be better suited for the toilets even though it is a compromise of vastu principles, but the negativity is not as severe as its placement in other directions.

Do not construct toilets/bathrooms at any place other than North West or West direction of the house.

Do not construct the toilets/ bathrooms under the external staircase of a house. Toilet/ bathroom should not be constructed above the house’s pooja room. The toilets which are constructed outside the house should not touch the compound wall and the mother wall.

The seating position of the sanitary ware in toilets should be in North to South or South to North direction only. The water heater which is placed in the bathroom should come at the South East portion.

Any toilet in the house at South East will lead to unpleasant consequences to the health of female members in that house.

Staircase Vastu

Internal Staircase can come only in the middle of South or West directions and External staircase can come in South East, South West or North West. Internal Staircase can come only in the middle of South or West directions and External staircase can come in South East, South West or North West.

No internal staircase should be constructed in any of the four corners of a house. There should not be any staircase-both internal as well as external staircase in the North East.

The external staircase which is constructed outside the house should be laid with the support of a cantilever (without a pillar) and no store rooms, toilets or bathrooms should be constructed under them. It should not become a closed structure. External staircase should not rest on the compound wall.

*The South / West should be higher than the North/East.

Bed Room Vastu

Bed Room is a place where an individual spends nearly one third of his life. Hence, it is quite important to plan it properly for good sleep as well as good relationship with spouse.

The room in the South west portion of the house should be used as a Master bedroom. The head of the family should use this room.

Girl children can use the Room in the North West portion as their Bed Room. Guests can also be allotted the North West room.

Older people can use the Room in the East as their Bed Room. Newly married couples should not use the room in the North East as their Bed Room.

The room in the SouthEast should not be used as a bedroom for couples.

Bed should be placed near the South West portion of the Bed Room. It should not be placed under a beam. While sleeping head should not be placed in the North direction. It is better to avoid Television, Computer, Mirror, etc in the Bed Room. Wooden cot is advisable. People related to a particular type of group can use iron cot.

Kitchen Vastu

The placement of Kitchen should be planned at the South East portion of a house and cooking should be done facing east direction. The only other alternative to South East(Fire/Agni) is North West(Air/Vayu).

A window can be planned in the East of the North East portion of the SE Kitchen and the Exhaust can be planned to be kept at the South of the South East portion of the SE Kitchen. Opening for Window or Exhaust should not come in the East of the South East portion.

The kitchen slab should not fully extend and touch the North wall of the kitchen so as to ensure that the North East portion is not closed.

The window or the structure for separating the kitchen and the dining hall should be square or rectangle in shape.

Kitchen should never be planned in the North East or South West portion of a house.

Pooja Room Vastu

While choosing the placement of a Pooja Room/ shelf, the following points may be kept in mind:

It is best to have the pooja room/shelf in the SouthEast portion of the house. The other alternative will be the NorthWest portion. It will be easy and better to have it installed within the western wall (as shown in the image) of the SouthEast kitchen, if only vegetarian food is cooked in the house, so that the images of Gods to be worshipped will face East and further, there will be no issue of anybody walking above the pooja shelf.

Pooja room should not come in the north east/ south west portion of a house, as fire has to be lit in a pooja room and lighting of Fire should happen only in SouthEast/NorthWest. It is not good for male members of the family, if fire is lit in NE/SW. In this situation, when a male member goes out of the house (for whatever reason including silly fights/employment, etc), it has to be understood that god has helped the entire family(including the male member) by sending him out of the house. It has a bearing on the income of the household also.

Pooja Room should not be placed under a staircase.

Toilet/bathroom should not be built above the pooja room.

‘Vastu’ & the concept of “Success Without Loss”

This post is in continuation of my earlier post.

The reason for me advocating to live in a simple vastu compliant house is “Success without any loss.

What is success?

Generally people think Success includes any member of the family being famous, rich, etc. Many do not even bother to think that success or happiness is also about good relationships (including marital), good health to all the family members, etc.

What is loss?

Well…loss, according to me, includes, one of the family member being/suffering –

  1. mentally ill/Dyslexia
  2. physically handicapped
  3. sudden death/accident/suicide
  4. remaining unmarried
  5. remaining childless
  6. loss of spouse due to death, divorce, etc
  7. dreaded diseases like cancer, sudden heart attack, etc.

If an individual loves his family and doesn’t want any of his family member to suffer from any of the above, the only option for him is to seek the protection from the ever dependable universe which is available in the simple form as to how a place of residence should be constructed as per vastu. Many people think of only money as the criteria for a successful life. Well, only an individual can say how fulfilled his life is when he faces any one of the above losses inspite of having a lot of money. Just try to ask a person who has lost his loving husband/wife, father/mother, daughter/son, brother/sister how he/she feels. Only he/she knows the suffering one undergoes. Money is also one among the most important criteria which is required for a balanced fulfilled life. Research in the field of vastu shows that a person living in a vastu compliant house can freely look to only attracting and earning money and that he does not require to waste his time, money and energy in unwanted things like going to court, hospitals, etc. Here, I would like to mention a very important fact i.e. one should remember that nothing can be changed regarding what has happened earlier. But, a lot can be done to have a good future.

Please go through the following link where you can find the ways to change your future:

Can any person easily get to live in a vastu compliant house?

No. It is not easy for a person with bad attitude to get himself into a vastu compliant house. For a person to get himself to live in a vastu compliant house, he has to make himself eligible to reside in such a house. Not all persons can get to live in a vastu compliant house even though he may be super rich. A person with only good attitude can attempt and get a vastu compliant house. Hence, being a good natured individual is of utmost importance for getting to live in a vastu compliant house. That is the nature’s way to care for good natured individuals, by taking this knowledge to them.

It is for us to think and decide about our future which includes the future of our near and dear ones.

Vastu, Life & Simplicity

A simple house whose foundation is in a square or rectangular shape without any complications is the best house to live in. Vastu is simple. In the same way, life will be joyful if it is simple and does not contain clutter. The basic rules for vastu compliant house are given below. Though, vastushastram is a vast subject, which also touches astrology, this basic knowledge is sufficient enough for providing a comfortable lifestyle coupled with good health & wealth to the inhabitants.

  1. Plot/Building should be square/rectangle. i.e. four sides with right angle-90 degrees
  2. The walls of the compound and the walls of the house inside the compound should be parallel to each other.
  3. The space between the compound walls and the walls of the house in the North/East side should be more than the space in the South/West respectively.
  4. The South/West walls of the compound should be higher than the North/East walls.
  5. The building of the house should be higher on the South/West side than the North/East i.e. a room on the top floor can be built on the southwest.
  6. The gate/entrance/openings/windows of the plot/house should be planned only in the positive zone(Uchasthanam) i.e. the entrance should be towards east on the north side, towards north on the east side, towards north on the west side and towards east on the south side.
  7. There should be no internal staircase inside the four corners of the house. Internal staircase can be built in the middle of the south/west side only.
  8. Except in the northeast portion of the house, external staircase can be built on the other 3 corners with cantilever support.
  9. The slope of the Staircase should be higher on the south/west than north/east.
  10. Sump can be built in the north/east of the northeast zone of the plot within the building wall and not beyond it.
  11. Septic tank can be built in the north of northwest zone of the plot within the building wall and not beyond it. The pit should be planned in between the building/compound wall and should not touch the building/compound walls.
  12. Overhead water tank should ideally be on top of the southwest portion of the house i.e. southwest portion should be higher than northeast.
  13. Kitchen/fire should be planned in the southeast and cooking should be done facing east. The second alternative is northwest.
  14. Bedrooms can be built in southwest/northwest, southwest being master bedroom. Bedroom should not be built in southeast.
  15. The toilets can be built in the northwest of the house and the toilet sink should face south/north only
  16. There should be no pit in the south/west portion of the plot.

Why I chose to include “Vastu” also as a profession for me? Is the field of vastu noble one? Is “vastu” or the “science of dwelling” necessary?

What is a noble profession? Generally, professions in the field of health, teaching, etc are being termed as noble professions. Well…my definition of noble profession will be that in whatever field one is in, if one has noble thoughts and actions while being in a particular profession, it can be termed as a noble profession.

How does a vasthu consultant qualify to be in a noble profession? When an individual is faced with challenges in life, which he is unable to tackle on his own, a genuine vasthu consultant can hand hold him and help him face and defeat the challenge by offering suitable solutions. The effect of good vasthu house on an individual is a life changing one. When the profession of vasthu consultant helps in changing lives for the better, is it not a noble profession. Well, as far as I am concerned, whatever engagement/profession I am in, I make it a noble one.

How can we know whether vasthu is scientific or just based on blind faith?

Well…the “vasthu” or “the science of dwelling”, which I know, is a simple science based on previous data and facts which led to the framing of the simple basic rules of Sri Aandal Vastu. Even though, the science of vasthu is an ancient one, recent research in the field of vasthu being conducted, shows that a person residing in a vasthu compliant house can live a happy fulfilled life. I came to know of the benefits of vasthu from Dr Andal P.Chockalingam, who has created a brand of vasthu in the name and style of “Sri Aandal Vastu”. When we were faced with some challenges in our family in the past decade, and when the modern science was of little help, I had personally tried the changes suggested by him and found that this science was a magnificent one, which many believe to be of blind faith and stupid. That was the time I discovered that ‘vastu’ was the Universe’s biggest kept secret. I am grateful to the universe for showing us the right person with the right knowledge because, when faced with challenges, it is of utmost importance that we don’t get caught with wrong guidance. Even if one doesn’t believe in the concept of vasthu, is it wrong to buy a plot/land and constructing a building by applying the rules of vasthu. The cost of not applying the rules of vasthu is definitely huge.

How to identify the right vasthu consultant?

Just ask the vasthu consultant as to where the pooja room should be in the house. Many of them say it should be in the North East. Well, this is just enough to reject that person. The simple reason is that lamp should not be lit in North East and fire can be lit only at South East(Agni/Fire) or North West(Vayu/Air) and the North East portion should be light and no weight should be placed there. Next, is the placement of toilet. If the person says that it can be situated at SouthEast, then, that is one other reason enough to reject that person. The fact is that vasthu does not support any toilet inside the house. And any toilet in the house at SouthEast will lead to unpleasant consequences to the female members in that house. Of all the options available, NorthWest would be better suited for the toilets even though it is a compromise of vasthu principles, but the negativity is not as severe as its placement in other directions.

Can vasthu be implemented correctly by reading books on vasthu?

No. Just as we all know the Laws, Acts, Rules or Regulations as available in books, we seek the advise of a lawyer/attorney who specializes in his field because he remains an expert in that field and can practically guide us properly. Similarly, it is quite difficult to implement the rules applicable in vasthu correctly in construction of buildings by studying books. Hence, it is advisable to choose the right person as a vasthu consultant even before buying a plot or land where the building is to be constructed, so as to avoid unnecessary wastage of time and money in the future. When you meet me for consultation, you are buying “the extract” of hundreds of hours of learning, hard work, experimentation, risks taken; you are buying years of patience, uncertainty, miraculous moments, moments of pure joy & the moments of satisfaction. You are not just paying for one thing. You are buying a piece of heart, a piece of soul – a piece of someone else’s life. You also help some unknown life to blossom. To know the value of VASTU, I have to do a separate post and I will try to post it early.

To know and see whether your residence complies with the basic rules of Vasthu, please see the link given below and compare it with your house:
